Florence Nightingale 1820-1910

The husband and wife producing and acting team of Herbert Wilcox and Anna Neagle took a play written by Reginald Berkeley and ran a mere 12 performances on Broadway in 1931 as a vehicle for Anna Neagle giving her one of her most popular roles. Anna Neagle set some kind of record in her career playing more female British icons than anyone else. She played Queen Victoria, Edith Cavell, and Nell Gwyn before essaying Florence Nightingale who was a feminist icon way back in the day before women had the franchise.

Oddly enough she was not crazy about the suffrage movement in and of itself. At a time when she was trying to open up the nursing profession for women she received little support from those who wanted the vote. She thought a lot of them ought to be spending equal time participating in the profession she was trying to open up.

Nightingale was a woman born to the landed gentry whose family hobnobbed with a lot of the movers and shakers in the British Empire. Her interest in medicine dismayed her family who just wanted her to get married and settle down and do needlepoint if she wanted to create.

The film and play with brief prologues and epilogues in her old age covers the period of the Crimean War through the death of her friend and ally in the Palmerston cabinet Lord Sidney Herbert. Herbert is played her by a dapper and charming Michael Wilding who struggles tirelessly to get support among his colleagues for Nightingale's work nursing the soldiers in the Crimea and improving the sanitary conditions under which the wounded convalesced. Lord Palmerston is sympathetically played by Felix Aylmer and Wilding's greatest opponent is played by Arthur Young as William Gladstone who was Chancellor of the Exchequer and guardian of the nation's purse as it were. Seeing some of these people arguing seriously that proper nursing care was coddling the troops is truly frightening.

Nightingale's image with the oil lamp going about the dimly lit wards looking after her charges became her popular image thanks to the London Times reporting of the hospital conditions for the wounded troops in the Crimean War, one of the first examples of investigative journalism. Later on when American poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow used the line about The Lady With The Lamp in one of his works, even though it wasn't about Florence Nightingale the line became a signature for her. Neagle is compassionate, determined and regal in her performance.

There is so much more to Florence Nightingale in her life and work, but The Lady With The Lamp will give you a fine introduction to one of the most useful lives spent on earth.

The funniest Tin Tan comedy ever

Since I was a kid, I had enjoyed classic Mexican cinema, especially that of the comedy genre. This movie is, by far, one of the most entertaining black and white films ever made. It is hard to see German Valdez "Tin Tan" involved on such improbable situations as this one, except perhaps, "Simbad el Mareado". Gorgeous girls, clever dialog, silly situations, a perfect casting and musical scenes that complement a very entertaining story make this movie a true jewel of the genre that will keep you laughing from start to finish. This film has the usual gang of great actors: Wolf Ruvinskis, José René Ruiz "Tun Tun", Juan Garcia and Marcelo Chavez, led, of course by Tin Tan in the role of a very mischievous character that puts everyone at trouble with his unwanted comments. It also has its dose of action: there is an incredible scene at the ending, where Tin Tan climbs to the top of the Mexico City Cathedral, that impressed me since I was a kid and saw this movie on TV for the first time. I still wonder if this was performed by him or a double. If you are searching for the perfect Tin Tan movie, this one has to be it.

Sweet confetti!

Hackett and Goodrich were some of the best screenwriters Hollywood ever produced and even when the movie isn't clicking on all cylinders, the dialogue usually is and when you listen to it, you notice the potential for a great movie is always there. Such is the case of Too young to kiss, a plot that had the necessary oomph but a director and stars that go for the easy. The pluses: Allyson is completely convincing in costume and makeup as the twelve year old she pretends to be. Van Johnson's droll and fatigued performance strikes the right pitch more often than not. The mistaken identity plot is handled here much better than it was in The Major and Minor, a movie to which comparisons have to be made, but is a better movie than that one. The ending feels rushed but that is because of the poor execution, in the hands of Billy Wilder who directed the other movie, it would have been gold as the love strokes and magic of the heart would conquer.

"Dragnet" Heroes Go 'Postal'

For someone who grew up in the Fifties watching Dragnet as a kid, viewing this film in the Nineties was strange: the cop-heroes of that TV show, Jack Webb and Harry Morgan, are now villains in this film!

Webb played the tougher of the two characters, by far, and was effective in that role. Meanwhile, Alan Ladd played his normal good guy-tough guy role. Another odd thing about this movie is that Ladd was an agent for the U.S. Post Office, an organization - at least back then before people went "postal" - one doesn't normally think need policemen.

But, as it was explained in the film, it was needed and the movie goes quickly from a corny-hokey start into a tough film noir. Phyllis Calvert adds a soft touch to the proceedings as a nun who humanizes Ladd, and helps him with the case.

In all, I'm making this sound perhaps more interesting than it was, because it was okay but nothing super. Still, I'd like to see it get a DVD treatment some day and I'd consider buying it.

Uncharacteristically competent Ulmer picture

This film is a pleasant surprise from cinema's greatest liar, Edgar G. Ulmer. (His claims for his career in interviews seem now to be regarded as largely preposterous -- many flat out lies, much inflation of his contributions...) But this is a nice, competent little comedy built from crime story elements, and quite enjoyable. Part of the surprise is the far-better-than-just-decent cast: Dick Haymes (ok -- none too great -- in the title role), Nina Foch, excellent as The Girl in The Story; Lionel Stander, as always both lively and believable, and Roland Young, looking sadly worn out. Below the title, there is Oscar Karlweis, a most appealing Viennese actor (and important on Broadway as Jacobowsky in the original production of "Jacobowsky and the Colonel," in the role Danny Kaye played in the film), Jean Casto (her only film role; she originated the role in "Pal Joey" (1940) that made Elaine Stritch a star in the 1952 revival -- which co-starred Lionel Stander!). Uncredited: Dort Clark (of "Bells Are Ringing") and John Lupton (of "Battle Cry"), both in small speaking roles. Lastly, Freddie Bartholomew appears in his final film role -- and, sadly, appears to have completely lost his talent. The role is terrible, and he's awful in it. Smart man to leave the business at this point.

As to the relation of this film to Ulmer's oeuvre -- well, don't make me laugh! But I will say that the absence of Ulmer's musical "genius," that fellow Erdody, is extremely welcome. As always with Ulmer, there is too much score, but this one is not as insufferable as the ones Erdody cranked out.

A sweet, entertaining film.

Bank comptroller John Hewitt is a much-respected member of the community. One afternoon he is persuaded to make a small two-dollar bet at the racetrack and collects a couple of hundred dollars when his horse wins. Such a return-on-investment intrigues him and he begins to frequent the track and making larger bets. After a short period of winning, he hits a losing streak and his savings are soon wiped out. He then starts to take money from the bank and is soon thousands of stolen-dollars behind. Mary Slate, secretary of his bookmaker, advises him that the bookmaker has a sure thing, and if he will liberate $20,000 or so from the bank, he can get in on it and solve all his problems.

Good and hooked

The only gambling I've ever enjoyed in my life is the $2.00 window at the racetrack. I've always liked to see where my $2.00 is being spent. I remember one time going to Finger Lakes racetrack and coming home with four winners out of eight races. Wow, I'm some sort of genius. Needless to say like John Litel in Two Dollar Bettor I learned soon I wasn't.

But I never graduated beyond the $2.00 window and that certainly wasn't John Litel. A friend brings him to a racetrack where he's never been and he places a bet and wins. He has some more winners including a big longshot. After that he's placing bets with a bookie whose collector is the seductive Marie Windsor. Litel is good and hooked as only Marie can hook them.

But Windsor has her own agenda involving her recently released from prison husband Steve Brodie. Litel's already embezzling from his company and as comptroller he has the access to do it. Let's say it ends badly all around.

This independent production from an outfit called Realart Studios looks and feels like an expanded version of one of MGM's Crime Does Not Pay series. The performances are sincere and Marie Windsor is evil as Marie Windsor can only be. Still it's a shoddy production and can't get too high a rating from me.

Gritty Little Outdoor Drama

Pete (Graves) returns to small mountain town to reacquaint with adopted brother Ownie (Calhoun) and police chief father (Fenton). While there, the bank is robbed under puzzling circumstances.

Reviewer hschmoo is right—this is a solid outdoor film, with scenic river locations, an unpredictable narrative, and some effective characterizations. The rapport between the brothers (Calhoun & Graves) appears genuine; at the same time, Fenton is excellent as the hardened cop father. The shifting dynamic between the three makes up the story's crux. We also get a flavor of a small town as the townspeople are drawn into the local bank robbery. Frankly, I had some trouble following who was in on what and why, but maybe I'm just slow. Much of the story is told in flashback while Graves hurtles down the roaring river and we wonder why he's chasing after his cop dad.

Director Rawlins and Ventura Productions were responsible the following year for an excellent little Western, Fort Defiance (1951), also with Peter Graves. Apparently, River was Graves' first movie, but you'd never guess it. It also looks like he did his own boating down the rapids, nor, for that matter, could I spot any of the usual Hollywood process shots. I suspect the unusually despairing final scene was due to this being an independent production made a long way from Hollywood and it's conventional endings. The narrative is definitely not a series of studio clichés, which makes this gritty little oddity doubly worth watching.

interesting B thriller

This film has just been shown as part of the "British films forever" season on BBC2.The film was made by Butchers Films(1910-1980)which made films for the bottom half of double bills. The film stars Sydney Tafler, the brother in law of that very versatile director Lewis Gilbert. Also starring is a very young Laurence Harvey ,before he adopted the "arent i beautiful"mannerisms of his later career,There are some very interesting location shots of the West End of London, including a number of cinema exteriors and also of Cambridge. The plot is a typical thriller of its times and has more holes in its plot than you would find in a piece of Swiss cheese. There is however one very daring scene for its time.Kathleen Byron plays the frustrated girlfriend of a don.She is immediately attracted to Harvey. They have a dance then a very sensual kiss and there is a clear indication that he can have his wicked way with her when mum has gone to sleep. To ensure an early night for mum she is given a sleeping pill but fate intervenes.Anyway to buffs of British cinema it is worth a watch.

Don't Take This One For Granted

THE African QUEEN is probably one of the most widely available films in the world, on sale in the electronics department of virtually every major retail chain, a commonplace at every rental counter, frequently seen on television. It is hard to imagine any one in the western world, especially in the United States, who has not seen the film at least once--and probably more than once. And so we take it for granted.

That is a mistake. Based on the famous C.S. Forester novel, which it follows quite closely, THE African QUEEN is the simple story of pragmatic river-rat Charlie Allnut (Bogart) and high-minded Methodist missionary spinster Rose Sayer (Hepburn) who are thrown together by chance when German troops sweep through Africa during World War I. Once safely aboard his beat-up riverboat "The African Queen," Allnut desires nothing more than to dodge the Germans until war's end; Rose, however, determines to strike a blow against the Germans by sailing the boat downriver to attack a German battleship.

There are so many fine things about this movie that they are hard to innumerate. Filmed on location in the Congo, the cinematography is remarkably fine without being obtrusive; the script, which is at once subtle and very purposeful, has a remarkably natural tone; the two stars--who play the vast majority of the film alone together--give justly famous performances; and Huston's direction is so fine that we never feel even the slightest hint of directorial manipulation. As an adventure, it has a sense of realism that most adventure stories lack; as a character study it is remarkably detailed and finely wrought; as a love story, it is quite touching without engaging in common sentimentality. And it can be enjoyed by many people of diverse backgrounds and ages without the faintest qualm.

If you haven't seen THE African QUEEN in a while (or heaven forbid never seen it at all) don't take it for granted thinking you'll catch it sooner or later. Sit down with the film and watch it with fresh eyes. You'll be amazed.

Good, but...

If you want to see all of the Warner Stars from 1950 - 1955, they're all here. It's fun to see so many famous faces like Doris Day and Gordon MacRae, but there is no real plot to this movie. Troops are sad, stars cheer them up, troops are happy. There are some cute tunes and it's actually a lot of fun to see just how many stars they can cram into this film - but only a few of them stick around for the whole movie. MGM did it so much better in the 40s with movies like TILL THE CLOUDS ROLL BY and THOUSANDS CHEER. Those films at least had a plot, with stars giving cameos

  • this seems to be a bad imitation of those films. It's still a worthwhile

film, but don't spend an arm and a leg trying to find it, it's not THAT great.

A pleasant change of pace.

This film might just take you by surprise. After all, in so many films Gary Cooper plays the bigger than life hero. And, in so many WWII films (especially those made during the war), the story is about bigger than life heroes. Well, as a nice change of pace, Cooper plays a woefully unprepared and not especially heroic guy in this war film set during WWII--but made a few years later.

The film begins with Cooper receiving his first command of a naval ship. This seems weird to him, as he's only a reserve officer and has zero experience with ships. To make things a LOT worse, it turns out just about everyone on his new ship has no experience either! Heck, they aren't even sure how to take the ship out of port--it's that bad. To make things even worse, the Navy is testing out a new engine--and they've installed it on this ship! They can't help but fail and the film consists of one problem after another trying to get this ship to sea. Overall, an interesting film that actually was pretty entertaining and mildly funny--and I liked that it didn't try hard for jokes but took a more casual approach. It also helped that Cooper had some nice support--with Eddie Arnold, Jack Webb, Millard Mitchell, Ray Collins and many other veteran supporting actors. And, interestingly, the film was a first for three soon to be big names--Lee Marvin, Charley Buchinsky (Charles Bronson) and Jack Warden. Well worth seeing and undemanding fun.

A captivating Messalina...

Maria Felix in the title role is a captivating Messalina because she portrays this unlovely character with a full range of emotions...imperious and haughty, winsome and cajoling while cozening her dotard husband, needy and pleading with her main lover Caius Cilius (Georges Marchal), cold and calculating as she casually murders a young smitten boy, and ultimately terrified when her crafty machinations go awry and she is bereft of any friends or allies. Though taking great liberty with actual historical events, the film presents the most notorious woman in Roman history as a many-faceted complex person of deep and dark passions who comes to an ignominious end through her excesses and folly. And the magnificent Maria is up to the challenge, giving the best portrait of Messalina on screen to date. She ruthlessly pursues her treasonous agenda while "foolish" Emperor Claudius devotes his attention to one of his pet projects, dredging the silted-up port of Brindisi to free it for shipping.

positive response from memory

The movie is vague in my mind because I saw it 55yrs ago when it debuted here in Raton, New Mexico. I remember it was exciting; this was for a five year old. The greatest excitement came from the city activities to commemorate the occasion. This included parades, dances and parties. My present day next door neighbor, a high school student at the time, danced with Dorothy Hart---a lifetime event for him.

For the benefit of civic historical programs, I am trying to track down a copy of the movie. We are a small town trying to beat the doldrums that affect many small towns in America at this time. We are trying put together a film festival focused around "The Raton Pass" and the associated history of our area---the Santa Fe Trail. We have been through what seems to be all of the normal sources to find this movie. Can anyone help with a source?

Typical Fifties moral tale

There seem to be a large number of these types of film produced in the fifties and sixties in the UK. They always seemed to have a very obvious villain and very obvious good guys, usually the only difference between the films would be the background setting. This is a good example of this type of movie because it's set in a rather run-down fairground populated by stereo-typical fairground types - the heart-of-gold fortune-teller, the gruff but kind boxing promoter, the naive up-and-coming boxer and the shady character riding the Wall of Death. Maxwell Reed plays 'Racer' the archetypal kid from the wrong side of the tracks with an unknown past and a huge chip on his shoulder. Laurence Harvey plays the gullible but likable 'Mag' Maguire who idolises 'Racer' despite the latter wearing the heaviest eye shadow seen on film.

I've always had a soft spot for these types of low-budget films because they seem to capture a snapshot of a post-war Britain that is long gone. The plot is predictable but enjoyable nonetheless.

Highly recommended for its its portrayal of Aviation Cadet life in the 50's

In 1951 I went to the Premier of this movie in Houston Texas. I was an Aviation Cadet at the time. I have seen the movie on AMC several times. Although there are no legitimate tapes as far as I know I have obtained one from ebay. I would like to get an uncut 16mm or 35mm film for showing if they are available. I have collected peripherals such as posters, black and white stills and ads about this movie. The movie came out during the Korean War and was done using actual settings and real Air Force persona. In fact in the initial screening in Houston several of my classmates are shown. The movie as shown on AMC does not include that segment. It may have been cut out after the initial premier before being distributed. It was realistic as it showed the life of a cadet from start to his commission. It also showed the heartbreak of being "washed out" as a good many cadets were. It is truly a film of the early fifties and shows young men being prepared for war in the Korean skies.

Ann Martin (Helen Walker') is a jewel thief recently released from prison, and is forced by a gang to take a job as a companion to an elderly recluse, Madame Rousseau (Elisabeth Risdon'), who has shut herself off from the world. The old woman owns an oil-of-myrrh which she doles out on an as-needed basis to the makers of "Temptation" perfume who have offered her fabulous sums of money to buy out her entire stock of myrrh. The gang, led by George Trent (Wilton Graff) and Ed Praskins (Emory Parnell) , who hides his villainy behind a deceptive air of friendliness, orders Ann to find the myrrh stock, and when she does not succeed, she is in danger.

Right Up There With The Best Film Noir

This is a wonderfully ironic little movie. A female prisoner is paroled to work in what seems to everyone like a wholesome candy store. This is just a front, though the proprietor stays in the picture. It is arranged for her to stay in this small town to find the ingredients of an expensive perfume. To do this, she must cozy up to the widow of the man who patented it.

Mickey Rooney did an excellent job directing it. There are a few gaps in the plot but overall it is a good screenplay. And I think the title is, though possibly misleading at its release, a stroke of genius. What a great idea to give a nasty little story like this a name redolent of soap opera! Helen Walker does a superb job in the lead. She was an excellent actress -- the highlight of "Nightmare Alley." (She was for me, anyway.) Elizabeth Risdon is very good as the Legent, gentle lady she is out to bilk.

Nothing here is what it seems: "My True Story" refers not to a heart-tugging romance but to cold-hearted scheme. Candy -- fudge, no less -- hides evil. This one is a must!
